EXAMINING PLACE, AGENCY AND MINDFULNESS IN LEARNERS MANAGING THEIR OWN
LEARNING
by Professor Len Cairns
Please let [log in to unmask] know if you intend to come.
Abstract
This lecture examines the theory and concepts surrounding youth and adult
learners and their management of their own learning. The lecture will draw
on Social Cognitive theory to argue a position for the greater development
and fostering of learner managed learning in youths and adults. In
particular, the presentation raises issues and ideas about the concepts of
Place, including aspects of situated learning, as well as the Vygostkian
notion of the Zone of Proximal Development; Agency, with reference to
agentic behaviour and motivation theory; and Mindfulness, with reference to
the awareness of thinking and learning among youth and adult learners. The
lecture will then examine related trends in workplace learning, and offer a
critique of aspects of learner disengagement and engagement leading to an
emerging engagement model based on recent research with youth. Finally, some
related insights about possible new views of social justice, particularly
relevant for fringe and marginalised social groups will conclude the
presentation.
