Hello all,
Colleagues in England will no doubt be interested in the HEFCE's newest definition of completion:
http://www.hefce.ac.uk/Pubs/hefce/2003/03_44/
Annex D
14. Where a student is studying a number of modules that may all count towards the same qualification then this should be treated as a single programme of study. We have changed the definition with effect from 2003-04 to recognise that some students may choose not to undergo final assessment on the basis that they have already met the academic criteria to pass the module.
16. Where there is no final exam, or the final exam does not constitute the final assessment for the module, for example where a dissertation is submitted after exams, completion would be measured against submission of the final coursework or dissertation for the module, or passing the module.
18. Where assessment is optional (for example on open programmes, including continuing education provision) students should only be treated as completions where they undergo formal assessment such that if they pass the assessment they will be awarded credits. [unchanged]
