Dear Colleagues
I have been asked to forward this to the list. Those members of the list
who have followed recent events in Newcastle (c.f press release at
http://www.cll.ncl.ac.uk)will know of the very effective campaigning
work carried out by this group of students in support of Lifelong
Learning activities in this region. I very much support their request
that you bring their letter to the attention of your own adult students.
My apologies to colleagues whose institutions have already responded to
the hard copy version.
Many thanks
Ian
REF: UACE Conference: 2003
Dear CE-List Members
I am writing on behalf of FACE (Friends of Adult and Continuing
Education), a small group of adult students studying courses held in the
Centre for Lifelong Learning in Newcastle.
In the last academic year, with the support of a body of adult students,
we actively sought to retain a viable, broad-based, higher education
programme which serves people in Newcastle and the four surrounding
counties.
One consequence of our campaign has been an increased awareness
of the broader picture of the current situation nationally and of the
general concern about the loss of similar cultural and educational
resource centres in a number of universities.
As yet there is no national organisation of university adult
students. The Universities Association for Continuing Education
conference, to be held in Newcastle in 2003, could usefully provide an
opportunity for adult students to debate current issues and a platform
for their voices to be heard. We envisage 'fringe' discussions with
fellow students, an observer role where appropriate and a possible
opportunity for student input/interaction at some point in the
conference.
These ideas were put to Professor Bill Jones, in his role as
secretary of UACE, and indications are positive.
We should appreciate if you would bring this letter to the attention of
your adult students and ask those who wish to work with us or who have
any queries, to contact us via [log in to unmask]
Yours Sincerely,
Laura Yates (on behalf of FACE)
