Can anyone advise on the proper allowance of time and pay for the
supervision and assessment of an undergraduate dissertation of 10,000
words, please? I would also like to know what others pay and allow in
time for second-marking of same.
[For anyone interested, the issue emerges from efforts to
comply with new legislation by building a relationship between
pay rates for sessional tutors which can be related to salaried staff
pay. We have landed on an hourly rate of GBP16.12, but for teaching
activities we pay twice this to reflect the associated time spent on
preparation and assessment. In applying the formula I have assumed
that the single-hourly rate should be paid for dissertation support and
assessment, where some colleagues are arguing that there is a large
amount of time spent on preparation, and I have also reduced the number
of hours allocated because I thought they were excessive at 10 and have
reduced them to 8. The result is a double-cut for this one area of work
at a time of fairly significant increases for all other types of work,
when we have 3 staff who only do supervision and assessment.]
All advice gratefully accepted.
Daniel
