Appears to be linked to DoH and other interest in what issues need further
research in relation to public health & the internet. There should be more
information about the proceedings available sometime later, but thought I
should mention it to give you the chance to think about what issues you
would prioritise. A participant said that the European Commission was
shortly considering funding more research, too. Several very interesting
talks.
Couple of particular resources I noted:
INASP's health link page, relevant to developing and transitional countries,
at http://www.inasp.info/links/health/ If you are interested in this issue,
see also links from homepage at http://www.inasp.info , including the text
of their newsletter and INASP Health.
Another (which amazingly I found by typing the ISBN no into Google!) was a
report you can read free full text at
http://www.nwpho.org.uk/reports/ICT.pdf
I'm too lazy to put the full title (and cant copy and paste), but its about
tackling health and digital inequalities in the information age, and
includes some very nice summaries of research into internet use etc. There's
also a print copy of it held at the British Library Document Supply Centre,
and I've sent one to be added to the reference collection, but that may Take
Some Time to reach the shelves!
The Deputy CMO finished the day with a very interesting comment on the
statement they released on ricin last week- apparently, CNN and European
media were covering it within seconds, so plans for a more organised (and
accurate?) dissemination to European colleagues were rather overtaken.
Apparently, the approach of providing straightforward info to the public
info worked well, and the DoH were able to monitor this via the small number
of calls received by NHS Direct. I heard about another aspect of it at
coffee time- one public health worker had been trying to fax the statement
to GPs surgery with mixed success, so tried ringing them up to give them the
url for the statement on the web. 4 of the practices said that they couldnt
take this message 'as the computer person isnt here at the moment'!
