JOHN DRYDEN TRANSLATION COMPETITION 2004
The British Comparative Literature Association and the British Centre
for Literary Translation (University of East Anglia) are pleased to
announce their continued joint sponsorship of a translation competition
for 2004. Prizes will be awarded for the best unpublished literary
translations from any language into English. Literary translation
includes poetry, prose or drama, from any period; entries may be up to
25 double-spaced pages in length.
The entry fee is five pounds sterling per entry. If you join the BCLA
between 1 August 2003 and 31 January 2004, you may submit one entry
free of charge.
CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF ENTRIES: 31 January 2004.
First prize: 350 pounds; second prize: 200 pounds; third prize: 100
pounds. Other entries may receive commendations. Prize-winners will
be announced in July 2004, and prizes will be presented later in the
year.
Winning entries will be published in full on the BCLA website, and
extracts from winning entries are eligible for publication in the BCLA
journal Comparative Critical Studies.

literature. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to

This is the Third Call for Papers for the 2004 Symposium on Mediterranean
Archaeology to be held in the School of Classics, Trinity College in Dublin
on 20-22 February 2004.
Submissions are invited from postgraduate students who are currently
working on their PhD or research Master's degree. The presentations should
take the form of a paper of no more than 15 minutes of length.
Abstracts of not more than 150 words should be emailed (in Word format) to

In the abstract document, you should include your name, the name of your
university, your email address and the title of your paper.
The following themes for discussion are proposed by the organisers, but
they are intended only as suggestions and we will amend and expand them
based on response. Please feel free to submit your abstract even where it
does not fall within the listed categories, or to suggest new categories.

Tenure-Track Teaching Staff Positions
The Department of Classics and Religious Studies of the University of
Ottawa announces the opening of a full-time, tenure-track position for an
assistant or associate professor starting 1 July 2004.
Field of specialization: Judaeo-Christian Religions in Antiquity
PhD relevant to the field of religious studies is required. Preference
will be given to candidates who have sufficient refereed publications to
qualify for supervising graduate research at the University of Ottawa.
Preference will be given to candidates whose research and teaching
experience demonstrates competence in one or more of the following
subspecialties: religions and cultures; women and religions; social
scientific study of religion.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach and direct research at
the undergraduate and graduate levels in English and in French. This is a
bilingual position and active and demonstrated teaching competence in both
languages is a condition of tenure.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and consistent
with the University's Collective Agreement.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and
permanent residents will be given priority. Equity is a University Policy.
