Rome in Bloomsbury is a series of informal lunchtime seminars. All those
with an interest in Roman archaeology are warmly welcome to attend. Papers
will run for 25-30 mins, followed by 10-15 mins of questions and
discussion. Speakers will be provided with a slide projector and OHP.

The CSAD is hosting a conference in Oxford next year entitled "Alphabetic
Responses to Western Semitic Writing" to be held at St. Hilda's College,
1st - 3rd July, 2004. This will examine the emergence of
alphabetic Greek scripts in the context of the use and development of
other writing systems in the Mediterranean World during the Early Iron

MYTH AND IMAGE: EASTERN INFLUENCES IN AUGUSTAN ROME
An International Conference organised by the Department of Classics,
University of Wales Lampeter, with the support of the University of Wales
Institute for Classics and Ancient History will be held at Pantycelyn Hall,
University of Wales Aberystwyth
8-10 July 2004.
The conference aims to explore aspects of Roman myth and images that have
their basis in eastern cults and traditions and to understand how these
traditions were understood and employed by Augustus in establishing and
justifying his right to imperial rule.
The following scholars have shown an interest in participating:
Graham Anderson, Evi Anagnostou, Michelle Cottier, Sabine Grebe, Keith
Hopwood, Kathleen Kolman, Doug Lee, David Noy, Mirjam Plantinga,
AntonPowell, Jane Rowlandson, John von Sickle, Susan Sorek, Rosemary
Wright.
Offers of papers are still welcome; deadline for submission of proposals to
the organisers is 31st march 2004.
The setting in Aberystwyth by the sea is very attractive. Full-board
accommodation (Thursday tea to Saturday lunch) is 65 pounds sterling and
conference fee 25.
