A call for Summer School students and faculty as well as a call for papers for the Conference are being circulated.

ASSOCIATION FOR HETERODOX ECONOMICS
ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2004
CALL FOR PAPERS: OPENING-UP ECONOMICS
16 - 18 JULY, 2004
UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, UK
The legacy of neoliberalism and challenges of globalisation have led to an increased awareness of the economic across the social sciences and society more generally. In the debates that are emerging, HETERODOX ECONOMISTS are well-placed to contribute. Opne to trans-disciplinary analyses, heterodox economics is able to bring new and progressive perspectives and policies to bear on the pressing economic and social problems facing society.
This conference aims to respond to such opportunities by opening-up the terrain of economics on two fronts:
FIRST, from within economics. We encourage the submission of papers examining issues and deploying approaches neglected by the current orthodoxy, demonstrating the vitality of heterodox economics and its continued relevance to contemporary social questions.
SECOND by going beyond the traditional, narrow academic boundaries that define modern 'economics'. We invite papers that encourage dialogue between the various social sciences on a range of contemporary social issues.
Just as popular discontent is increasing about rising inequalities and uncertainties in the global economy, traditionl economics is found wanting in providing an adequate understanding or response. In this spirit, the conference provides a forum for advancing new ideas on how to take heterodox political economy forward in theoretical and policy debates. Above all, it aims to demonstrate the continuing relevance of political economy to those within and without modern economics.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION
We are happy to accept papers on these and other themes from a heterodox perspective.

Economics
Intensive Course: June 3- 18, 2004
Conference: June 20- 22, 2004
Hosted by the Department of Economics
University of Utah
Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
Dear Friends,
We are writing to announce the second cycle of a new program, Capacity Building
and Knowledge Networking on Gender, Macroeconomics and International Economics.
A central component of the program is the two-week intensive course on
Engendering Macroeconomics and International Economics. The course will take
place in Salt Lake City, University of Utah in the United States from June
3-18, 2004. We are writing to solicit your support in disseminating information
to potential applicants.
The program is being organized by the International Working Group on Gender,
Macroeconomics and International Economics (GEM- IWG), an international network
of economists which was formed in 1994. The program has two objectives: first,
to engage with fellow economists in order to enhance capacity building for
research, teaching, policy making and advocacy on gender equitable approaches
to macroeconomics, international economics and globalization; and second, to
increase knowledge networking on these themes by strengthening the intellectual
links among practitioners in networks working on similar issues.
The program is intended for economists, including advanced graduate students in
economics, as well as more senior academics, researchers and those in
government. Up to 30 fellows will be admitted to the program. The fellows of
the program will be required, at a minimum, to have completed two years of
study in an economics Ph.D. program and have passed their qualifying exams, or
have its equivalent such as a master's degree in economics. These requirements
may be waived only under exceptional circumstances. Funding is available for up
to 25 fellows. Priority will be given to applicants from the global South and
transition economies.
Attached please find an application form as well as announcement on the details
of the program, which consists of a self-study module, the intensive two-week
course, and a public conference. We are certain that among the people in your
network, some will be good candidates for this program. As the application
deadline for the course is January 15, 2004, we ask that you kindly let them
know about it and that you forward this announcement to organizations, research
institutes and economics departments of universities. If applicable, we also
ask that you kindly post this announcement in your organization's website or
newsletter. You can find further information on our program at our website
www.genderandmacro.org. including information on the first cycle which was
implemented during May - June 2003. If you have any questions, please contact
