REVOLT, REBELLION AND DEMOCRACY IN LATIN AMERICA
A Public Forum organised by Capital&Class.
The last two years have witnessed an explosion of protest
against neo-liberalism in South America. In Argentina,
Brasil, and Bolivia workers, peasants and the unemployed
have taken to the streets to protest against their Governments'
adherence to the 'Washington Consenus'. New forms of participatory
democracy have begun to emerge, most notably in Argentina and in
the Porto Alegre Social Forums. Where forces of the right have
struck back, as in Venezuela, ordinary people have risen in protest.
Meanwhile in Colombia a bitter struggle is being fought by trade
unions and workers against a Government and allied forces backed by
US imperialism. It seems that the sub-continent is in open revolt,
and neo-liberal policies of global capitalism are being resisted
daily.
This Public Forum aims to draw together some experiences from
the Latin American struggle. It is organised by readers of the
journal Capital&Class in conjunction with the Centre for Studies
of Globalisation, Societies and Education at Bristol University.
