Two forthcoming one day courses at the BUFVC:
ENCODING DIGITAL VIDEO FOR NETWORK DELIVERY -
INTRODUCTION

This one-day course provides an introduction to the problems and
issues relating to digitising moving images for online delivery: finding
or creating the material; encoding, putting on a server, playback to the
end user and use in a teaching environment.
Greg Newton-Ingham, University of East Anglia, and Murray Weston,
Director of the BUFVC, will present the course. It is aimed at further
and higher education staff with a special interest in the use of moving
pictures, computer services staff, producers, archivists and academic
service providers.
Course content:
* copyright status and educational exceptions
* video content - producing new content and reusing existing footage,
* analogue and digital formats, telecine
* encoding, storing and networking content
* playback technologies
* forms of delivery and use
Participants will not be expected to have had prior experience in
handling moving images in an IT environment.

This course is offered in response to demand for an in depth
programme and follows on from the Introductory course, outlined
above. It is recommended that delegates have previously taken the
Introductory BUFVC course or have experience of delivering
web-based information.
It will provide more detailed technical instruction in web based moving
image delivery in the following:
* considerations when producing moving image content for encoding
* file formats for moving images
* compression; comparing codecs and tools for use
* system software and platforms for delivery
* storage and networking issues
* server technology, backing up and archiving
Cost per person, for each course, including lunch and refreshments:
non-members: GBP 160 (136.17 + VAT), members: GBP 100 (85.11 +
VAT). Participants booking for both one-day courses can receive a
discount rate: non-members: GBP 250 (212.77 + VAT), members:
GBP 170 (144.68 + VAT).
