Hi Gill
I quite agree that the strength of CADE is it breadth, and it would
seem essential to hang on to this as something that sets CADE apart.
You're right, of course, to say that computing has changed
significantly since 1995, and is now completely embedded into the
culture (practice as well as teaching) of the visual arts. That
doesn't necessary imply that CADE should move away from this focus,
in fact, there is probably strength in remaining focussed on the
digital, but continuing to deal with issues and content rather than
the technology itself (which ISEA and SIGGRAPH handle rather well).
The focus could be sharpened, in fact, and events based rather more
solidly in ideas and ways of thinking and making.
A name change to broaden the educational remit might be useful,
although CADE is a brand is known, at least to those who have come in
contact with it, so name changes are always something to be wary of.
Clearly the aspiration to be an international organisation has always
been present, and the Copenhagen conference should do a lot to
enhance this. More events taking place outside the UK would make
CADE, almost by definition, international.
Although I'm not a great fan of telematic art events, some live
cross-cultural events on split sites might also enhance the
internationality of the organisation.
bye for now
