EVOLUTION 2003
9 - 11 October
Leeds, UK

-----------------------------------------

Following the success of last year's programme, Lumen present another 3-day
international media arts festival exploring the historical and contemporary
use of new technologies in the arts and their interrelated cultural issues.

Evolution 2003 will look at how artists interfere with, influence and
punctuate mass communication systems and media technologies. An
international mix of artists will deliver in-depth presentations of their
work in the form of film and video screenings, lecture demonstrations and
live performances.

The programme will feature pioneering contributors from the field of
experimental film and video art including TAKAHIKO IIMURA (Japan), WOJCIECH
BRUSZEWSKI (Poland) and WOODY and STEINA VASULKA (US) who will present
retrospectives of their work and discuss the processes involved in its
making. As productive today as they were in the 1970's, the Vasulkas have
spent the past 35 years rigorously exploring video as an artistic medium,
producing a vast archive of experiments using specially developed equipment
and techniques.

Evolution 2003 will also see presentations from some of the world's leading
contemporary artists. CORY ARCANGEL (US), computer artist and founder of the
BEIGE PROGRAMMING ENSEMBLE, will provide an insight into his world of rave,
acid house, and commodore64 graffitti. French artist MATTHIEU LAURETTE will
talk about his work using television and his exposé on the TV game show
Tournez Manege. KEVIN and JENNIFER MCCOY (US) will discuss the importance of
popular culture, sci-fi and television narrative in their work, and webcast
duo RADIOQUALIA (New Zealand) will broadcast a live presentation from Cape
Town, South Africa. One of New York's most ambitious and progressive
multimedia artists, BEN RUBIN, will present his most recent works including
'The Listening Post', and talk about his latest collaborative works in
progress with architect's Diller & Scofidio and Mark Hansen from Lucent
Technologies.

The festival will continue its tradition of staging unique live events with
a public performance and talk from the New York SURVEILLANCE CAMERA PLAYERS,
a collective who protest against the use of surveillance cameras in public
places. The group's founder, BILL BROWN, will conduct a guided tour of
surveillance cameras in Leeds city centre and perform a specially adapted
play.

The final day of Evolution 2003 will see one of its highlights when ZYGMUNT
BAUMAN and GUSTAV METZGER, two of the most prolific and persuasive post war
thinkers, will come together for the first time in a discussion chaired by
GRISELDA POLLOCK from the University of Leeds. Zygmunt has been described as
one of the twentieth century's great social theorists and the world's
foremost sociologist of postmodernity. Gustav's life has been occupied by
his quest for social change and his opposition to capitalism, which he has
expressed through the theory and practice of Auto-destructive Art. Under the
theme of 'Liquid Modernity', the two will discuss the implications of
'high-tech' technologies upon human relationships in the light of their own
experiences, studies and writings.

Leeds based collective VECTOR, will bring the programme to a fitting close
with their 5th anniversary celebration held in collaboration with Evolution.
Vector provide the city with a much needed and truly alternative home for
experimental music and sound.
