DEAR COLLEAGUE,
e-Learning is one of the most rapidly advancing areas of digital content
applications and is already having a significant impact at all levels of
formal education and beyond into life long and continuing learning. In the
UK the National Grid for Learning (launched in 1998) has led to Curriculum
Online aimed to give school teachers online access to a wide range of
digital learning materials. The Museums, Libraries and Archives sector has
a number of initiatives to create culture and heritage content for
educational use. The HE & FE sector is also seeing rapid moves towards
e-Learning and in the USA the market for fully online degree programs is
currently growing at a rate of 40 percent annually.
Driven by digital content generation initiatives and Web broadband
connectivity, e-Learning is being exploited through increasingly
sophisticated software applications in the form of virtual and managed
learning environments. However issues such as IPR, digital pedagogy,
training and support represent significant challenges. At the EVA e-Learning
Conference, which is being held at UCL, the Institute of Archaeology, 31-34
Gordon Square on the 28th July, these areas will be covered together with a
range of other topics including case studies from the schools and HE & FE
sectors and a perspective of new initiatives under the European Commission's
6th Framework Programme.
This conference aims to create a general forum for the diverse stakeholders
in e-Learning and the cultural sector and to examine and discuss the key
components that make up e-Learning; the issues and challenges together with
how they are being currently addressed. These include digital content
generation, IPR, professional development and digital pedagogy, technical
infrastructure and the effectiveness and cost benefits of e-Learning.
