Final Call for papers for the 2nd BCS HCI Group Workshop on
“Culture and HCI: Bridging Cultural and Digital Divides”

We invite extended abstracts (max. 2 sides A4) from members of
both the academic and industry communities alike who wish to
share and exchange ideas based around the following suggested
initial foci:
- Cross cultural issues in human computer interaction.
- E-commerce trust and credibility perception across cultural boundaries.
- Globalisation of products and services
- The digital divide and how this is localised
- Sub-cultures and their impact on design and usability issues
- The effects of cultural diversity on cross cultural computer supported
collaborative work.
- Sociological and ethnographic approaches to cross cultural design
Topics could include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Usability issues for mobile devices across cultural and sub cultural
boundaries e.g. youth cultures or the disabled
- E-Culture and the digital divide i.e. is the Internet Society creating a
disadvantaged underclass.
- Cross-cultural models and aspects of trust and/or security in digital
transactions
- The semiotics of e-culture
- Cross-cultural web design
- Cultural aspects of novel devices and domestic appliance design
- Designing for inclusivity e.g. ethnic groups, people with special needs
- Cultural aspects of designing structure and content for Interactive TV
- linguistic and cultural boundaries
- User testing issues across cultural boundaries
- Requirements capture and discovery for cross-cultural design
- Web based information architectures which reflect cross cultural needs
Preference will be given to those abstracts that combine both
theory with practice or empirical evidence as well as those which
address leading edge, exploratory, controversial or interdisciplinary
aspects of culture and usability. All abstracts will be reviewed by a
programme committee.
A key aim of the workshop is to encourage cross-fertilisation of
ideas from a number of disciplines. Full papers will be included in the
Workshop Proceedings to be published by Greenwich University Press with an
assigned ISBN number. Selected papers will be considered for future journal
publication following extension and revision.
