SPATIALITY, DIGITALITY, ART, DESIGN, MEDIA, CULTURE & PERFORMANCE
>From Architecture/Design/Fine Arts through Media/Cultural Studies and
Science/Technology to Performance Arts there is tension between content-led
and technology-driven research in the field of creative digital media. Is
the object to develop new knowledge relevant to creative practice, art,
design, performance and exhibition? Or is it to develop viable hardware and
software tools to enable effective practice? Both are clearly crucial to
fostering excellence and innovation. The tension between them, however,
affects everything from the definition of projects through their funding to
the publication, dissemination and evaluation of outcomes.
Practice-based-research and practice-as-research occupy a borderland
between Academy, Commercial R & D and the Cultural Industries. Can
practice-based research in a university environment create work of real
aesthetic merit and true research value? Can artistic and performance
practice developed within the framework of industrial R&D or the academic
world be truly groundbreaking? Art, design, performance and digital media
in new spatial configurations, many of which have been developed as part of
a research process, are on exhibition and under debate at RESPOND
Cambridge, 2-5 April 2003. The 1-day Symposium on 5 April brings together
leading researchers, practitioners and policy-makers to debate the crucial
issues at the heart of RESEARCH/PRACTICE/PRACTICE/RESEARCH and put forward
their recommendations.
Demos will run in the Demo Room, the Gallery and the Pit throughout the
day. In the Theatre, the aims, range, funding and evaluation parameters and
the achievements of research groups from the UK, EU and US will be
presented in the context of the symposium topic. The final 2 hours of the
day will be devoted to a Round Table discussion with input from
researchers, practitioners and funders. Registration includes lunch in the
Gallery and drinks before the final Round Table Session. Block bookings can
be made for dinner after the event.
