I take the point about starting new threads but so far as I can see this
comes down to a limitation of the JISCmail software. On most forums you
can Reply to someone and change the subject heading at the same time (i.e.
your message is still displayed on-screen as part of the ongoing thread, -
and it shows exactly which message your message is a reply to - but it
also clearly announces that you are going off at a particular tangent).
But on JISCmail if you change the subject heading your message becomes
completely detached from the message that you were responding to, and
becomes the decontextualised beginning of a new conversation.
so basically I think you should be asking JISCmail to join the modern
world!
(Still, the JISCmail way does have certain advantages. It's analogous to a
crowded bar, in which everyone has half an ear to everyone else and you
cannot reply to one person without glancingly making a curtsey to what
others have already said. It allows some conversational subtleties that
you might not get on a more orderly site.)
