On Thursday January 30th, Fiona Templeton will join us at Folly to screen
her renowned 1988 work, YOU - The City, "an intimate Manhattan wide play for
an audience of one". The work was seen by private appointment only, taking
the "client" on a 2-hour journey into less and less known parts of New York,
from a corporate office marked only "YOU" to a church, a peepshow, the back
of a car that drives off, etc. All directly involving, and changing
according to, you. The work has since been recreated in several cities and
five languages.
She will also speak about her current project, an epic, The Medead, "a
journey down into the language and action of dream and the subconscious",
which has been developed at Lancaster University; and prior projects
including Cells of Release, an installation created in an abandoned
penitentiary, one cell per day for six weeks, in collaboration with Amnesty
International.
This artist talk is to compliment Fionaıs forthcoming performance of her
solo work Recognition at the Nuffield Theatre at Lancaster University.
Recognition was created with her late collaborator, and is a dialogue
created before his death, with him on videotape. It engages with issues of
absence and performing, fiction and mortality.
Born in Scotland, Fiona was co-founder of Londonıs Theatre of Mistakes, a
seminal performance company in the 70s. She lived in New York for over 20
years. She has published books of performance and poetry, and has performed
and exhibited internationally. Her work has won several awards and she has
just been given the annual award from the Foundation for Contemporary
Performance Arts in New York.
