Yes, indeed! I've become permanently conditioned to a desire to exist in 31
inches of space. Seriously though, and I'm going to use a dreaded word, it
could be argued that such a social reality is a 'metonym' (argh, I've said
it, please no debates on the definitions of that word, I might throw myself
out of the window) for the very crude generalisations of 'class'. All the
people in economy are not socially identical, backgrounds will vary wildly,
but they have in common a form of exclusion which is an expression of the
distinctions of the power of money, just as say a kid from Burnley who goes
to the local comp but wants to write will have far less chance of 'success'
in the social sense than someone with a wealthy background who goes to the
right schools and universities and whose school and uni friends include
reviewers. That's a very crude illustration, sadly the limitations of e-mail
do not allow for the refinements of argument necessary on so weighty a
subject as this.
