Dear All,
A colleague has asked the following question. Much appreciated if you have any suggestions. Thanks.
I'm currently trying to set up First Year innumeracy courses in Blackboard. These have weekly assessments in the form of problems with numerical answers. I'm having some problems knowing how best to use Blackboard for this. Previously, answers were marked using Excel and a range was accepted for each answer, e.g. 1.3 to 1.4, so that it did not matter if a student entered their answer as 1.3, 1.33, 1.3356, etc. So far, I plan to use the Blackboard "Fill in the blank" option with multiple answers, but it's impossible to know exactly what all students will enter. The rubric for the assessment says:
* Check that you have used the correct units (as indicated in the question).
* Do not type anything except numbers in the boxes, and a decimal point if necessary (no spaces or units!). Use 'e" to indicate an exponent or power, e.g. "1.2e3".
* Use the same number of decimal places in your answer as are used in the question.
* Do not round your answers.
But I can guarantee that even this will not cover all situations. Is there a better way?
