This really depends what you want, If you download the "Advanced
Integration and Data Management Manual" from blackboard's support site
it tells you more about the single sign on options.
The basic options are:
Win2K authentication against active directory whereby students logging
in to windows based clients using IE will get instant access to
blackboard without logging in because they are already logged into the
client. This is "true" single sign on
LDAP authentication also queries the active directory but allows any
browser and OS to log in to the system, the drawback is that you must
enter the credentials twice (once to log onto the client machine and
twice to log into blackboard) but they are the same user/password
combination. This is "single" sign on, ie, you have "one single
user/pass" but you must use it multiple times.
You can also use your own authentication module as long as you set a cgi
header to say "yes this user is logged in", how and why you set that
header would be up to your module to work out.
Finally there is, *shudder*, passport authentication, I'll let you read
the blackboard documentation for that one.
I believe there's another option on *nix based systems, but that's the
option if you're running on windows.
