Dear List Members,
I am considering entering a PhD program that will better enable me to speak
authoritatively on the links between emerging nanotechnologies, their
potential environmental/public health impacts, and the public policy
elements needed to prevent or minimize those impacts. In particular, I want
to foster the creation of new policies that will make biomimetics the top
priority of government goals and resources that are increasingly directed
towards nanotechnology R&D and commercialization.
After 20 years working with environmental non-profits, it's clear to me that
environmental safeguards will not accompany the development of new
technologies and industrial operations if the public interest community does
not fight hard and loud for it. At present, the environmental community is
largely in the dark regarding both nanotechnology and biomimicry. My
attempts over the past six months to put biomimetics on the radar screen of
the most influential US environmental advocacy organizations suggests I'm a
bit ahead of the curve; these organizations are too busy with today's
hot-button issues to focus on anything else.
Inevitably, once the nanotech DDT-PCB-CFC-PVC equivalents hit the headlines,
the public interest community will be spurred to take action. In my view,
promoting biomimetic alternatives should become a major focus of their
campaigns.
In the meantime, I seek to find a PhD program that will enable me to be a
primary biomimicry advocate who can speak effectively and influentially to
leading public interest advocates, scientists, business executives, and
government policy makers.
I welcome the opportunity to discuss this with anyone who's interested, and
I would very greatly appreciate the name and contact information of
appropriate and potential PhD advisors, particularly in the New York City
area, or elsewhere in the US.
Many thanks!
