Two-Day Workshop on
UKHEC Workshop on Parallel Finite Element Analysis
To Be Held at The University of Manchester
On Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th of March 2003
University of Manchester, UK

UKHEC (UK High-End Computing) in conjunction with The
Manchester Research
Centre
for Computational Science (MRCCS) is pleased to announce a
two-day workshop
focusing
on Parallel Finite Element Analysis.
In the UK there are both nationally and locally funded
high-end computing
facilities
for academia. To get the most out of these facilities
researchers need to
have analysis tools that run in parallel. This workshop
aims to encourage
engineers who currently use Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
to exploit
parallel methodology so that they can increase
the complexity of their problems and take advantage of
these high-end
computing
facilities.
Aims:
o A brief introduction to HPC/Parallel Computing,
visualization and
e-science.
o Professor Ian Smith one of the authors
of "Programming the Finite Element
Method" is a guest lecturer. In his original
book example serial
codes were provided for a variety of FEA problems,
but in this course his
new parallel versions will be introduced.
o In depth instruction regarding developing parallel
FEA programs using the
element by element (EBE) method, iterative solvers
and MPI.
o Covers the parallel solution, not parallel mesh
generation or post
processing.
o Discussion of performance issues, optimisation and
future developments.
o Practical aspects of visualization will be briefly
covered.
The workshop also features a significant component of
hands-on practical sessions. Participants are encouraged
to bring their own codes, taking advantage of the presence
of experts to discuss the possibility of parallelisation.
However, please note that attendees are strongly
encouraged to contact [log in to unmask] well before
the workshop to discuss the suitability of their codes for
parallelisation using the method to be presented.
Full details may be found on the above website.
