Women's Writing
Special issue
Sex, Sexuality and The Body
Dedicated to the memory of Professor Roy Porter
This is a special issue devoted to sex and the body, on women who wrote
during the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries about sex, sexual
activities and/or sexuality in the form of diaries, letters, articles,
manuals or novels. These writers could include female physicians,
lesbians, prostitutes, mothers and wives. Papers are invited on topics
ranging from women's notions about procreative sexual to racy memoirs or
bawdy poems. What were the views of women on contemporary sexual
attitudes and activities? How did women regard their own bodies? To what
extent did they disclose details of their sexual activities to either their
husbands or lovers? What was their knowledge of sexual matters and how did
they regard the medical advice of the day in connection with sexual
matters?
