29TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL BYRON CONFERENCE
ACADEMIC PROGRAM, 19-22 AUGUST 2003
We invite papers for the Liverpool Conference, the main theme of which is
'Byron and the Good Life'. In the first instance, this theme invites
papers that focus on [A] Byron's sense or showing of what a good life is
as well as on [B] Byron's claim to be a moral poet and his defence of the
connection between poetry and ethics, poetry and life, against the
'Romantic' tendencies to sever these things. Included in this is his
defence of certain styles of living and of writing. In the second
instance, we invite papers that approach this title from the other way
round and focus on Byron's concern with transgression, crime, sin, and
guilt. Finally, there is that common meaning of 'the good life' which
means hedonistic styles of living for the moment. All these subjects are
intended by the title 'Byron and the Good Life': the scope is broad, but
papers that directly attend to one or other of these emphases as set out
here will be preferred to papers with other pre-occupations.
In addition, there will be a sub-theme to the conference, partly because
of its setting in Liverpool. This will be on 'Byron and the Sea'. Papers
may be on any aspect of this subject.
We will need definite intimations of your intention to give a paper by 1
March 2003 but would prefer them before then. It is not necessary to set
out a full abstract of what you want to say at this stage, but we will
need a full working title and 500 words indicating what you mean by the
title and what you will mainly be referring to.
