ASSESS: SPSS USERS' GROUP
WORKSHOP: THE SPSS COMMAND LANGUAGE
FRIDAY 4 APRIL 2003
EDINBURGH, UK
Many SPSS users do not progress beyond the point-and-click
interface, and therefore never experience the far greater
capabilities of the software's command language. A one-day
workshop on this extremely useful facility is to be held in
Edinburgh on Friday 4 April 2003, and taught by Frances Provan
(University of Edinburgh Computing Services) and Allan Reese
University of Hull). The registration fee, which includes lunch,
is 90 UK pounds with a discount for larger numbers, or 70 pounds
for registered students.
The SPSS command language offers immense gains in time and
effort. It allows you to save tasks and perform them later on
other data (or on the same data after correcting errors), to read
and manage the most complex data, and to exploit an extensive
range of statistical and other options not otherwise available.
The journal files of commands can be kept as a record or audit
trail of data manipulation and analysis.
This workshop starts with a brief overview of the principles of
writing and using SPSS commands, for the benefit of those who
have not explored this before, and shows how easy this can be. It
then covers progressively more powerful features including batch
processing and exploitation of the journal file, complex data
management, loops, vectors, and the principles of good program
development. The relationship of commands to macros (the
subject of another occasional SPSS workshop) and scripts is also
demonstrated.
The workshop will include a lot of hands-on work, with a good
networked PC for each person. It will be based on SPSS 11 on
Windows 98, but this should not be a problem for people who don't
know this particular version or operating system (it is a course
on the command language, after all). A general understanding of
the underlying principles of SPSS and some prior experience of it
will be required. No prior knowledge of SPSS syntax is assumed
and the day will start with a short basic introduction to the
subject. Nevertheless, members who already have some experience
of writing commands should find the workshop useful: the
afternoon will be given over to more elaborate examples,
discussion and the airing and sharing of problems.
The venue is the University of Edinburgh Computing Service, 19
Buccleuch Place, Edinburgh (maps available at the university web
site http://www.ed.ac.uk. Registration and coffee will start at
9.30 am. The workshop will run from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm, with a
break for lunch.
A timetable, map and other details will be sent to participants
in advance of the meeting. Accommodation at the university's
halls, 15 minutes walk, is available through Edinburgh First, web
site http://edfirst1.ednet.co.uk/
There may also be rooms at the Kenneth Mackenzie Hospitality
Suite in the Richmond Place complex, 5 minutes' walk away.

DON'T DELAY!
Demand for this workshop is expected to be heavy. In the event of
over subscription, those who expressed interest earlier will have
priority. However, anyone turned down for this reason will be
placed on the priority list in the event of a repeat, if they
request it (their cheques will be returned, of course).
