ARLIS/UK & Ireland
Visit to The Women's Library, London E1
28 April 2003, 2-3pm
The Women's Library (http://www.thewomenslibrary.ac.uk/), formerly the
Fawcett Library, was established by Millicent Fawcett in
1926 as the Library of the London Society for Women’s Service. It has grown
to become the UK’s most comprehensive research library on all aspects of
women’s lives, and moved to its present purpose-built site in 2002.
As well as books, pamphlets, periodicals and archives, the Library is home
to rich holdings of photographs, posters, postcards, paintings, prints,
textiles and a collection of material culture, mixing themes ranging from
sexual health, in the posters produced by Josephine Butler's campaign
against the Contagious Diseases Acts; to art, home crafts, and politics in
the suffrage banners used to campaign for the vote; to equality and freedom
in posters, badges, and ephemera produced by women's groups over the past
thirty years.
This visit is an excellent opportunity to tour the reading rooms, hear more
about the history of the Library and see a selection of art- related
material from the collections.
Please email me at [log in to unmask] before 5 April to reserve a place.
There is no charge for this event.
Many thanks
