As part of a three year development plan, the Mass-Observation Archive has
created the new and exciting post of Development Officer to support the
Director of the Archive in managing the Mass-Observation Project. We are
looking for a creative and versatile person who will enjoy the Archive and
enhance its value as a research resource both within and beyond the
academic community. Candidates will be expected to have a first degree in a
relevant subject, have experience of project management and fund raising,
have good IT skills (including web-editing). The successful candidate will
have good oral and written communication skills and will be expected to
represent the archive in a variety of different social situations.
The Mass-Observation Archive holds the papers of Mass-Observation, a unique
British social research organisation operating between the late 1930s and
the early 1950s. The Archive which is a charitable trust, opened formally
at the University of Sussex in 1975. It is now available in the Library as
a social history resource and forms part of the Library’s Special
Collections. Usage of the material has been very diverse. The collection is
recognised internationally and has continued to be the basis for research
projects, books, journal articles, films, TV and radio programmes, novels,
art works and electronic publications.
Since 1981 the Archive has been used as the basis for the new “Mass-
Observation Project” (MOP) which revived the original idea of recording
everyday life by recruiting volunteer writers from all over the UK. These
writers respond at regular intervals to requests for their views and
experiences on a variety of themes chosen by the Archive Director, often in
partnership with researchers. The new Development Officer will be concerned
primarily with this Project and will be expected to make recommendations
for change and implement a wide range of new activities.
