Apologies for cross-posting
You may remember my posting a request for help nearly two years ago with my
task to select a replacement for the Lanslide software (now no longer
supported or updated) which at present handles my 35,000 and rising slide
library records. I have on record the answers many of you were kind enough
to give me to my request for information on database management /(slide)
library software in use in slide libraries in this country.
The general picture was of
* a proportion of collections putting slide records into their
Institution's book catalogues using Voyager, Talis etc.
* another group of slide librarians had grappled either on their own
or with their IT people to use Access or Filemaker Pro database management
systems (DMS) to manage their collections . Mostly just to produce
accessions lists for their SCLS returns to DACS and/or labels but not
developed sufficiently to be able to offer an OPAC to their users.
* A much smaller number had worked with software designed
specifically for special collections/libraries and had in operation fully
searchable OPACS , allowing keyword searching, using Boolean operators
,offering label generation etc etc.
At long last, gratefully, I find myself in a position whereby a budget has
been allocated to buy new software . I am therefore now actively and
urgently seeking a good product for my needs. I want to end up with a
searchable networked OPAC which uses Boolean operators, can create labels,
and can handle images (or links easily to software that handles images) .
As some time has elapsed I am asking you all for an update
Could any Slide Librarian/Visual resources curator who is using a good DMS
please send me a quick email with the product name and any additional
comments which might help me make the right choice here. Any warnings also
gratefully received
many thanks to you all
