London's Museums, Archives and Libraries
Archives and Learning Grant Programme
(Closing date for applications: Friday 21 November 2003)
The LMAL Archives and Learning Grant Programme is open to archive services
in the London region. A total of £15,000 is currently available to fund a
range of educational projects and learning initiatives costing up to £2000.
LMAL would welcome applications from archives/record offices seeking to fund
the following types of learning activities, projects and initiatives:
Learning initiatives:
* Consultancy work by an education specialist to develop a programme
of learning activities and/or educational resources for service users
* Consultancy work to enable the archive service to develop a learning
policy and action plan that documents aims, objectives, targets and
projected outputs in relation to current and future education projects and
life-long learning initiatives
* Production of a promotional leaflet, CD-ROM, audio-visual resource,
or online guide to enable children and young people to increase their use
and understanding of archives
* Production of printed and/or digital learning resources (comprising
lesson plans, information and activity sheets for students and
copies/replicas of archival materials, etc.) that illustrate how archives
can be used to support specific National Curriculum programmes of study or
GCSE subject courses
* Production of a series of information literacy/user education
materials designed to enable young people and adults with basic skills needs
to make greater use of the archive service - e.g. the production of guides
on using a reading room differentiated for use by young people and adults
with Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 literacy skills (NB: For further
details about each literacy level, please see the Adult Literacy Core
Curriculum at http://www.basic-skills.co.uk/)
* Development of a family learning event programme, series of workshop
activities or set of learning resources that encourage families to make
greater use of archives: for example, Saturday clubs, family fun days, local
history walks, talks and tours for family groups, staging local history
drama productions and promenade performances for family groups using
costumed actors, setting up an Archaeology Club or Family History Club, etc.
* Development of a local history walking project and production of new
resources to accompany a local history walking trail - e.g. a leaflet or
audio-guide documenting orientation information and historical facts about
the sites along the walk route, illustrated with information, images and/or
descriptions of resources from selected archival collections.
