THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES, Public Record Office - KEW
e-Access Department
Index Term Editor - Access to Archives (A2A) (temporary)
The objective of the A2A Programme is to maintain and develop the virtual
archives catalogue of material of national and regional significance as part
of the UK national archives network found on the World Wide Web at
<http://www.a2a.pro.gov.uk>
Under the programme, paper catalogues from local archive offices undergo
conversion to electronic form and are mounted on the Internet as will be new
or improved catalogues supplied in electronic form. Copies of the catalogues
are also returned to the contributing record offices. As part of this
process catalogues are indexed with the names of people, families and
organizations who have created the records or with which the records are
mainly concerned, as well as by place and subject. The Index Term Editor
will check these index terms, ensuring they conform in format to the NCA
Rules for the Construction of Personal, Place and Corporate Names and the
UNESCO Thesaurus, while also weeding out duplication. Full training will be
provided in the application of indexing standards in an automated
environment and in Encoded Archival Description (EAD).
You should be a qualified archivist or have experience of archival indexing
work, have some knowledge of the appropriate standards, as well as good
communication, interpersonal and team working skills.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a temporary position for 6 months and the starting date
will be from 15 September 2003. Employment is by agency and will be at a
rate of £10.27 per hour.
Candidates should apply with a covering letter and CV to Bill Stockting,
