Newspaper Database Re-born!
Thanks to the financial support of the Laser Foundation and the British
Library the NEWSPLAN London & South East database of some 2,500 local
newspaper titles is once more available on the web at:
http://www.newsplan.co.uk
The web-site's presentation and features have been greatly improved with,
for example, better searching by title and by place and more information on
local newspaper history. This web-site and database will be of significant
interest to those responsible for newspaper collections, local studies and
archives, and for reference services generally.
Teachers, students and researchers in higher and further education, as well
as in schools, will also find the database of interest and value. Local and
family history societies, too, can find much relevant material by consulting
it.
New features and further improvements will be included during the coming
year such as a chat room and noticeboard and eventually a means for direct
editing and additions to the database. Almost all the pages on the
web-site, including a comments page, will be fully 'open' though the editing
function and perhaps one or two other future pages should be
password-controlled. There are also easy links to other UK NEWSPLAN
web-sites.
We expect this resource to receive a great deal of use and be of help to
many kinds of users.
