The Royal College of Surgeons
Project Archivist
24 Month Fixed Term Contract
£20,500 pa
This is a fixed term post of two years funded by the Wellcome Trust under its Research Resources in Medical History grant scheme (see http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/en/1/homgrarrm.html for further details).
The Royal College of Surgeons of England (http://www.rcseng.ac.uk) is an independent professional body and a registered charity committed to promoting and advancing the highest standards of surgical care for patients.
The College possesses records dating back to its establishment in 1800, together with those of its predecessor, the Company of Surgeons of London, which was founded in 1745. However, the largest part of the archive consists of deposited archives and manuscripts, both individual items as well as collected papers of surgeons and scientists dating from the 18th century onwards.
The key aspect of your role will be the creation and development of an on-line catalogue (using ADLIB), through retrospective cataloguing. Educated to degree level, you will have a postgraduate archive qualification. In addition you will preferably have at least one year's post-qualification experience. A working knowledge of ISAD(G) and experience of using automated catalogues would be an advantage, as would a knowledge of, or interest in, the history of medicine. The ability to work as part of a small multi-professional team is essential as are excellent communication and IT skills.
