Dear Colleagues
The ICA's Section on Business and Labour Archives is pleased to announce a
joint meeting with the Society of American Archivists' Business Archives
Section, to take place in Los Angeles, California on August 20, 2003. The
meeting will be in the form of a colloquium with the theme of
globalization and the records of multinational/global companies. The
colloquium, for which there is a $40 (U.S.) registration fee, features a
full day of presentations that will be of great interest to corporate
archivists, corporate historians, archivists from repositories that hold
business records, and others interested in the global implications of the
archival profession. A continental breakfast and full lunch are included
in the registration fee. Registration will be limited to 100
participants. Individuals may choose to attend just the colloquium, or
may choose to also register for the Society of American Archivists' annual
meeting in Los Angeles, which will take place August 18 through 2!
4, 2003. All attendees are invited to participate in a reception the
evening of August 20, in honor of international attendees of SAA's annual
meeting.
The colloquium will open with presentations from Geoffrey Jones, Professor
of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, and David Logan,
Associate Dean and Executive Director of the Office of Executive
Development at the Marshall School of Business, University of Southern
California. Professor Jones will discuss the role of firms in creating
the first global economy before 1914, the subsequent decline in
globalization with the world wars and the Great Depression, and the
rebirth of the global economy from the 1960s. He will also discuss the
social implications of globalization, such as the spread across borders of
consumption habits, and the implications of these trends for business
archivists. Professor Logan will talk about the phenomenon of
globalization today - the increased emphasis on corporate social
responsibility, the impact of government and societal expectations on
global corporate expansion, the deep emotional response from various
groups to the idea!
of globalization, and changes in management theory and practice as a
result of these phenomena. He will also touch on the critical role that
archivists will now play in increasing investor confidence, developing
good relationships between companies and governments, and reassuring
worried social groups who fear that corporations are operating from a
hidden agenda.
The rest of the colloquium will feature presentations from archivists and
scholars from around the world. Scheduled topics include:
* "Business Archives and National Identity" (concerns and issues when a
multinational company takes over another company in a different region of
the world);
* "Documenting the Global Business" (how corporate archivists document
the activities of their companies around the world);
* "Global Developments in Privacy Legislation" (issues that business
archivists need to keep in mind in response to recent developments in
privacy requirements in various countries);
* "The Impact of Mergers, Acquisitions and Divestitures on the Management
of Business Archives" (case studies on how business archivists respond to
changes in their programs brought about by mergers, acquisitions or
divestitures); and
* "Business Archives from the Perspective of the User" (the point of view
of academic researchers who have conducted research in corporate archives
around the world).
Registration for the colloquium will be managed through the Society of
American Archivists. For information on the SAA Annual Meeting Program
