With apologies for cross-posting.
On the 3rd April, Buckinghamshire Libraries and Heritage Service launched
'The Aylesbury Prisoner Database', an online resource of information taken
from original records held at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies in
Aylesbury.
County Councillor, Mrs Margaret Dewar, Portfolio Holder for Community
Services, who officially launched the database said, 'This innovative
resource will provide a rare and invaluable insight into the lives of people
in the Victorian era. This is the first project of many we have planned for
the future.'
The database of entries are taken from the Gaol receiving books from the
1870s and includes details such as names, photographs, crimes and sentences,
thus showing the wide variety of people convicted in the Victorian era and
for a diversity of crimes.
One example is that of Mary Batson, aged 39, of Aylesbury who entered
Aylesbury Gaol for 21 days in 1872 for stealing 2 tins of meat. When charged
with the offence, she said 'she would not have taken the tins if she had not
been drinking.'
Another example is William Coles, aged 42, of Olney who was given 9 months in
1873 for stealing a lamb, who is described as 'a poor, ragged, half-starved
looking man'
Do you have an ancestor who committed a crime? Why not take a look, the
database can be found online at www.buckscc.gov.uk/bucks_prisoners
