announce The Gerald Aylmer Seminar 2003*
To be held at the Institute of Historical Research, London University on
Tuesday 21 October 2003 from 2pm to 4pm
What do historians want from archivists? (and vice-versa)
· digitised sources available online?
· sign-posts to the available archival sources for research?
· materials and facilities for teaching?
· peace and quiet in the search rooms?
· privileged access to archival materials?
Discussion has been reinvigorated by a recent article by Ian
Mortimer, ‘Discriminating between readers: the case for a policy of
flexibility’ Journal of the Society of Archivists vol 23 no 1 (April 2002,
pp 59-67).

The Gerald Aylmer Seminars were established in 2002 by the Royal Historical
Society and The National Archives (HMC) to encourage discussions between
historians and archivists.
The National Archives was formed in April 2003 by bring together the Public
Record Office (PRO) and the Historical Manuscripts Commission (HMC).
