I am sorry if I have caused embarrassment to Liverpool Record Office with my
query to the jiscmail. Since I adore Liverpool and constantly tell people
how wonderful its archives, museums and other cultural amenities are, it was
never my intention to draw negative attention to the place. In retrospect,
it would have been wiser to contact Liverpool Record Office privately and I
regret not doing that but, as Peter Kurilecz mentioned in his email, the
story was already widely circulated and had been seen outside of Liverpool
and by the archives profession. The misfortunate use of 'archives' in the
original article had caused confusion so it is perhaps a good thing that
this misleading interpretation of facts has been publicly clarified and that
the story can now be laid to rest.
With all good wishes to Liverpool Record Office, particularly in the run up
to the celebrations of 2007 (800th anniverary of the City's founding
charter) and then Cultural Capital of Europe in 2008. I wish you much
success in such a potentially exciting and positive time for archives.

Oxfordshire Record Office is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday
9.00am to 5.00pm. It is advisable to contact us before visiting to check
seat availability. If you wish to look at original records, you will need to
register for a County Archives Research Network ticket by providing two
passport-size photographs and official evidence of your address and
signature (e.g. driver's licence or bank statement and credit/debit card).
The ticket is valid for four years in about forty record offices around the
country, and is a security measure to protect irreplaceable documents.
