The Primarily History project is a unique comparative study of how academic
historians' locate primary sources, what they are teaching their students
about locating primary sources and what archives are doing to inform users
of new online finding aids.
The research is based on the premise that systems should be designed around
users and not vice versa. However, there have been relatively few studies of
humanists' information seeking behaviour and even fewer of historians. This
is at a time when ever more resources are being put into developing new
online finding aids such as EAD. Research on UK historians and archivists is
being conducted by the Humanities Advanced Technology and Information
Institute, University of Glasgow. Historians and archivists in the USA are
being surveyed by Prof. Helen Tibbo of the School of Information and Library
Science, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
We have completed our research on historians and will shortly be sending
surveys to a sample of 150 UK archives. If you receive a survey we hope you
will take the time to share your professional perspective. If you do not
receive a survey we hope that this project will be of interest and the
results will be of use to archivists and historians alike. Further
information on the project is available at:
