Livelihoods at the margins
ONE-DAY CONFERENCE
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
School of Oriental & African Studies
Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG
Friday 9 July 2004
Abstracts of 100-200 words are invited for papers based on
ethnographic research carried out with those who derive their
income in ways generally excluded from mainstream economic
analyses. These might draw, for example, on research carried
out with migrant labourers; street traders and unlicensed
workforces – such as unofficial tour guides and station
porters; and those pursuing trades at the margins of the law –
such as beggars, buskers, sex workers, drug vendors and
smugglers.
Key themes to be addressed include social exclusion; coping-
strategies; the relationship between these activities and the
mainstream; and the implications of these activities for NGO
action and Government policy.
The one-day event aims to draw out a wide range of current
work on these issues, and encourages inter-disciplinary and
multi-regional contributions. Presentations using film, sound-
recordings and other media are also welcomed. There is also
the possibility of an edited volume of conference papers or a
special edition of an online journal.
Abstracts should be sent by email – as Word format
attachments or pasted into an email message – to James
Staples ([log in to unmask]) by Friday 19 December. Thanks to
ESRC sponsorship, a contribution towards travel costs (within
the UK) to London will be available, as will light
refreshments and lunch.
