GENERAL PARTICULARS OF APPOINTMENT TO SENIOR
LECTURESHIPS (NON-CLINICAL)
(a) First appointments to established posts in the grade of Senior
Lecturer will be made in the first instance for a probationary period of
four years. A regular review will take place during the Second
Semester of the third year of such a probationary period, and a
re appointment, if made as a result of that review, will be for a period
extending to the normal age of retirement. If a re appointment is made
at the end of four years of probationary service, such re appointment
will be for a period extending to the normal age of retirement. Nothing
in the above shall prevent application at any time during the
probationary period for re appointment to the normal age of retirement.
In special cases, and subject to an express recommendation of Senate,
the above requirement of the period of probationary service may be
waived or modified (e.g. if the person concerned holds or has held an
appointment in the same grade in this or another University extending
to the normal age of retirement).
The first year of appointment of a person who assumes duty between 1
August and 31 January inclusive is deemed to end on 31 July
immediately following. The first year of the appointment of a person
who assumes duty between 1 February and 31 July inclusive is deemed
to end on 31 July of the following calendar year.
(b) From 1 August 2002 the annual salary scale attached to the post of
Senior Lecturer is as follows: £35,251; £36,712; £37,629; £38,681;
£39,958, with three discretionary points as follows: £40,841; £41,876;
£43,067.
The initial salary in all cases will be according to qualifications and
experience.
(c) The appointment is terminable by three months' notice in writing
on either side.
(d) The University participates in the Universities' Superannuation
Scheme, a nationwide pension scheme for academic and related staff in
universities. Benefits are related to final salary and contributions are
currently 6.35% of salary, while employers contribute at 14%.
Transfers in can be arranged from other schemes.
Membership of USS is voluntary for all eligible staff (normally anyone
employed for at least three months).
Further particulars about USS are available from the Pensions Section
of the Personnel Office.
NHSPS membership may be retained if the new appointment is in the
Medical School, subject to the agreement of the NHS Pensions Agency.
(e) The duties of each member of the non professorial teaching staff
include the following:
(1) To seek to further the object of the University (namely the
advancement of learning and knowledge by teaching and research) and
to give to the work of his or her post and to the general interests of the
University such time and labour as shall be deemed by the Council to be
sufficient.
(2) To provide such instruction in his or her subject (in accordance
with the curriculum from time to time approved by the relevant Faculty,
School or Departmental Board, or Board of Studies) as may be
required by his or her Head of School or Department. The Head of
School or Department shall in addition co- ordinate the instruction to be
given by all the members of the School or Department. Every holder of
an academic post shall give such other assistance in the work of the
School or Department as may be required by the Head. In accordance
with Statute XIV.5 and Ordinance VIII.3, the School or Departmental
Board has the power to advise the Head with regard to the co-ordination
of instruction and the allocation of other duties.
(3) To keep records, in the form approved by the Registrar and
Secretary, of the attendance of students and to report whenever
required on the progress of any student in his or her classes.
(4) To examine his or her classes and to examine candidates for
degrees, diplomas, scholarships and other University awards and
distinctions when and as often as required by the Senate, and to conduct
or assist in conducting examinations at such times and in such a way
as may be required by the Senate.
(5) To undertake research and to further scholarship by the
publication, and presentation (or other appropriate form of
dissemination) of such research.
(6) To observe the Charter, statutes, ordinances, regulations and
by laws of the University for the time being in force. In addition,
members of the University staff holding appointments which require
them to perform part or all of their duties on premises not under the
control of the University authorities must observe the rules,
regulations and by laws of the relevant authority at those premises.
(f) The University has adopted a Family Policy which makes provision
for paid special leave, paternity leave and job sharing. In addition the
University operates, jointly with the Manchester Metropolitan
University, a 100 place Nursery for the children (aged 6 months 5
years) of staff and students of the two institutions. Further information

(g) The University may be prepared to make a grant towards the
expenses involved in the removal of the successful candidate's
household effects made necessary as a result of taking up duties in the
University. The grant will not include storage costs, legal fees, estate
agents' fees or other expenses involved in buying or selling a house.

SUMMARY OF POST
The Arthritis Research Campaign’s Epidemiology Unit (arc EU)
is the largest research unit in the world dedicated to the
epidemiology of the rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders. It
undertakes several large multi-centre and single centre studies
and has access from these to some uniquely large datasets both
cross- sectional and longitudinal. This new post is suitable for a
highly qualified and experienced biostatistician, who has worked
in an epidemiological environment to provide leadership to the
scientists on statistical issues relating to the data gathered as
well as providing managerial leadership to the group of
computer scientists, database specialists and other statisticians
in providing a coherent service for statistical data analysis. The
post holder will also be expected to undertake some teaching,
supervision of research students, administrative duties at both
School/Faculty level and have time to develop their own
research interests.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
The successful applicant will have a graduate qualification in
biostatistics or related discipline and have at least 5 years
experience working in an epidemiological environment. S/he will
have demonstrable skills in providing high-level statistical
advice in the analysis of complex data sets and will have made
a major contribution to a substantial number of relevant
publications in high quality journals. S/he will have experience
in several epidemiological data analysis packages and be up to
date in developments in this area. Applicants must have
experience in teaching statistics at graduate level
Desirable
The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent
demonstration of a substantial piece of research in a relevant
area. S/he will have experience of STATA (the software
package used as a standard by the Unit’s staff). The successful
candidate ideally should have experience of developing training
programmes and packages to help other sin data analysis. The
successful applicant will ideally have experience in supervising
others, managing several different projects and able to prioritise.
The successful applicant will ideally also have experience of
presenting work at major international meetings in their field.
The salary is on the University Senior Lecturer scale: £35,251-
£39,958.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Senior Lecturer in Statistics
· Adopt the role of joint senior investigator in several of the
Unit’s major studies, advising on design, analysis and
interpretation of results
· Supervise junior staff in undertaking epidemiological data
analysis
· Assisting to prepare applicants for grant funding, reports to
funding and other agencies, ethical applications and scientific
papers for publication
· Planning and teaching short courses in biostatistics and
epidemiological data analysis including the use of STATA to
achieve this
· Undertaking some analyses of areas of personal interest, of
relevance to the work of the Unit.
· The post-holder would be expected to contribute
collaboratively on grant applications, but not necessarily be sole
principal investigator.
· Supervision and joint supervision, where appropriate, of
research students undertaking PhD/MPhil degrees.
· Participation in administrative activities in relation to the
involvement of the arc Unit within the School of Epidemiology
& Health Sciences and within the Faculty of Medicine,
Dentistry, Nursing & Pharmacy, where appropriate.
In general the post holder involvement in research will be a
collaborative one with other senior scientists rather than that of a
sole principal investigator.
Head of arc Unit Statistics and Information Division
The Division has the overall responsibility for ensuring that the
computing, statistical and other information services available
meet the needs of the scientific staff in their delivery of the arc’s
scientific programme. Specifically the Division advises on:
· Provision and distribution of computer hardware
· Provision and distribution of computer software for
database construction, information storage, statistical analysis
and preparation of material for presentation
· Standards of data management
· Archiving
· Provision of library and related information service.
· Design, contents and maintenance of the arc’s intranet and
internet websites
· Training of staff in all aspects of the above
· Budget including staffing requirements to achieve the above
· Attendance at conferences, meetings and related activities
by members of the Division for which an annual budget of
£1500 has been allocated and would be distributed by the
Division
The senior staff included in the Division comprise the head of
computing services, head of database services, the Unit
Librarian/Information Officer and the Unit Web Administrator.
The successful applicant would represent the view of the
Division at the bimonthly senior management team meetings
Information about the arc Unit
The ARC Epidemiology Research Unit
This Unit is a unique international Unit undertaking a number of
important and substantial population studies across the whole
range of musculoskeletal and rheumatic disorders. In addition,
the Unit provides a unique service giving advice and issuing data
in relation to the rheumatic diseases to a wide variety of bodies
and organisations, both internationally and in the United
Kingdom. It has extensive international links and has visitors
both short-term and long-term from overseas. Further

Conditions of Employment
The successful applicant will be covered by the terms and
conditions of employment relevant to all senior academic staff
employed by the University. In addition the appointee will have
to sign a confidentiality agreement with respect to maintaining
the confidentiality of any identifiable material received during the
course of employment. The funding for the post comes from a
block grant awarded by the arc which is renewable on a five
yearly basis. This post is considered a core post for the Unit’s
activities and long term funding for it from the arc is considered
to be reasonably secure. For exceptional candidates who make
a major identifiable individual contribution to the research
output possibilities exist within the arc Unit for further
promotion according to standard University procedures.
