Postgraduate Research leading to a PhD
The Department of Statistics is offering a 3 year studentship to study
for a PhD. The studentship is open to UK home candidates (fees and
living allowance at an enhanced stipend relative to the standard EPSRC
allowance) and EU candidates (fees only). Applicants should have, or
expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree (or
equivalent) in mathematics, statistics or a related subject.
Applications are invited from any candidates interested in an area of
probability or statistics in which there is expertise in the
department. The main research groups are: image and shape analysis,
and probability and statistical theory.
There are many possible research topics including:
Spatial-temporal modelling Approximations and limit theorems
Image and shape analysis Branching random walks
Data mining Stochastic differential equations
Bioinformatics

The Department of Statistics is part of a larger School of Mathematics
which has excellent dedicated computing resources and is adjacent to
the main Science and Engineering library. There are internal and formal
Departmental seminar programmes as well as many local RSS meetings.
Research students are encouraged to attend national and overseas
conferences as well as the Department's own annual international
research workshop.
