This unit, directed by Professors Richard Gray and Keith Wheatley, is funded
by the NHS to undertake clinical research across a wide range of medical
specialties. The BCTU provides an advisory service to clinicians wishing to
undertake clinical trials, and also adopts a proactive role by undertaking
meta-analyses of current evidence, and instigating new clinical trials in
key areas where current evidence is inadequate. The BCTU's main in-house
studies are in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, renal disease,
surgery, gynaecology and leukaemia, but the Unit has also provided advice
and support to over 100 other studies. The BCTU is located at Park Grange,
a large Victorian house with extensive gardens, which provides a pleasant
and stimulating environment.
We wish to appoint a statistician to join the expanding team and play a
central role in the Unit's research. This new vacancy provides an
outstanding opportunity for a statistician wishing to develop their
methodological expertise in clinical trial research within a successful,
rapidly expanding research Unit (already, since its establishment in 1997,
the BCTU has been awarded some £10 million in external funding.) Duties
will include: designing trials and assessing their feasibility, development
of data management systems, analysis and reporting of trials, with
particular responsibility for the MRC acute myeloid leukaemia trials.
Meta-analyses of existing data, to provide reliable evidence on treatment
efficacy and to identify future key research questions, will also be
undertaken.
A good class degree in statistics or other numerate discipline is essential.
Applicants should also have a postgraduate qualification, or at least 2
year's experience in applied statistics. Applicants should have strong
statistical and computing skills, a sound knowledge of statistical packages
(preferably SAS), good attention to detail, the ability to work both
independently and as part of a team, the ability to communicate statistical
issues to non-statisticians and a desire to develop skills in applied
medical statistics. Ideally, we would like to appoint a statistician with
previous experience of 'real-life' clinical trials and meta-analysis (a
position on the AR2 scale may be available for exceptional candidates), but
less experienced candidates with the potential to develop into high-class
trial statisticians will also be considered.
