PhD Studentship Biostatistics/Epidemiology
Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Diseases
A PhD studentship funded by Chief Scientist Office, Scottish Executive is available for 3 years beginning between 1st October and 31st December 2003. The studentship will be held in Public Health Sciences, Division of Community Health Sciences, University of Edinburgh under the supervision of Professor F G R Fowkes (Professor of Epidemiology) and Professor G D Murray (Professor of Medical Statistics). University fees will be paid as well as a maintenance grant at standard MRC levels (currently £10,000 pa).
The studentship will involve work on the Edinburgh Artery Study which is a cohort study of 1600 men and women begun in 1988. The principal aim of the study is to investigate the epidemiology, aetiology and natural history of arterial disease in the legs, as well as other cardiovascular disease. A very large number of genetic, environmental, social, and biochemical factors have been collected throughout the study providing the opportunity for a wide range of analyses. The student will derive hypotheses under the direction of the supervisors and test these on the datasets available, using a variety of statistical approaches.
Candidates for this studentship should ideally have some background in the biological, social or medical sciences and a higher qualification in statistics. Those with a background in mathematical sciences would also be suitable but should wish to work primarily on the applied rather than the theoretical aspects of biostatistics. Candidates with an epidemiology qualification would also be suitable, provided they had good experience of statistical analyses.
The Division of Community Health Sciences is located within the Medical School, Teviot Place. The department has a strong reputation for original research in epidemiology, statistics and the social sciences and health. It is also involved in a wide range of teaching activities, including inputs at all stages of the undergraduate medical curriculum and a range of MSc courses. The department has many national and international links, including designation as a Collaborating Centre for Health Planning and Management by the World Health Organisation.
