We are seeking a UK Maths/Stats student to undertake research in the
application of Maths and Stats in Biological Oceanography.
We have a studentship worth £4000 a year more than the standard
studentship (upwards of £8000). The studentship is paid quarterly.
There would be 6 weeks of fieldwork in years 1 and 2 at the Bedford
Institute of Oceanography at Dartmouth in Nova Scotia. There would also be the possibility of field trips at sea.
By the end of the 3 years the student will have experience in modelling
oceanographic processes and in manipulating several oceanographic data sets.
The work will be a mixture of computer programming, maths, stats and
biology. The idea is to validate an existing mathematical model of the
photoacclimation of phytoplankton photosynthesis (try that after a
couple of beers) using remotely sensed (satellite) observational data of
the North Atlantic. To help with the background the student would attend the 2nd year module on Aquatic Ecology, and the 3rd year module on The Open Sea.
There will be supervision by Prof Geider (Biology) and myself at Essex,
and by our partners in Nova Scotia.
If you have a 2(i) degree or better, and are interested, then write to
[log in to unmask] for further details, as soon as possible.
