Exploiting the potential of Bayesian methods in cluster randomised
trials
Simon Thompson
MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge
The hierarchical data structure resulting from cluster randomised trials
can usefully be approached using Bayesian methods.
These have certain advantages over alternative methods of analysis such
as summary statistics methods, marginal models,
and classical multilevel models. I will show a number of applications
of Bayesian methods in this area including:
sensitivity analysis to the assumed random effects distribution, use of
empirical evidence on intracluster correlation
coefficients (ICCs) as priors, analysis of absolute risk differences,
providing interval estimates for ICCs in complex
situations, analysis of multivariate outcomes, baseline adjustment in
repeated cross-sectional designs, and allowing for the
imprecision of ICCs in sample size calculations.
