CASE studentship in Statistics:
Product Comparisons with Repeated Categorical Response
A CASE PhD studentship for a project involving Unilever and the School of Applied Statistics at the University of Reading is available. Applications are invited for this three-year studentship which has a planned starting date of 1 October 2003.
Project outline:
Products such as deodorants are compared using trials on panellists where amongst other responses, assessments are made visually on a variety of characteristics. Although these characteristics are given numerical scores, the range of scores is very limited and methods of analysis that treat the responses as ordered categorical may be particularly appropriate. There are various ways of modelling repeated categorical responses over time, including subject effect models developed using conditional inference, generalised estimating equations, and random effect models.
This project will assess and develop statistical methodology for analysis of a range of trials of this general nature, such as cross-over trials, superiority trials and bio-equivalence testing. The supervisors will be Dr Mike Patefield at Reading and Professor Trevor Cox at Unilever.
