Royal Statistical Society, Reading Local Group Meeting
Thursday June 19, 4-6pm (refreshments afterwards)
The University of Reading, Nike Lecture Theatre, Department of Agriculture
Statistics in Public Inquiries
Dr Jan Heffernan (University of Lancaster)
Extreme values in the dock: the formal enquiry into the sinking of the
MV Derbyshire
Dr Paul Aylin (Imperial College)
The Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry
Dr Heffernan will talk on her contribution to the High Court Investigation
into the sinking of the MV Derbyshire. Models, motivated by extreme-value
theory and fitted to data from wave-tank experiments, were used to describe
extreme wave impacts on the vessel. Dr Aylin will talk on his work as
statistical consultant to the Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry. Careful
statistical modelling identified excess mortality after paediatric cardiac
surgery at Bristol compared to other centres.
All are welcome to attend. Further details of the meeting (abstracts and
directions) and of the Reading Local Group are at:
