NERC/EPSRC Environmental Maths & Stats CASE Studentship
Applications are invited for a three-year NERC/EPSRC
Environmental Maths & Statistics CASE studentship concerning
methods for data assimilation in coastal wave models. The work is
in collaboration with the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory
(POL). Full tuition fees will be covered, and a stipend of
GBP12000pa plus an EMS enhancement of GBP4000pa will be
paid. In addition the CASE partner will contribute at least
GBP2000pa.
Assimilation of HF Radar Data into Coastal Wave Models
Summary:
The aim of this studentship is to develop and compare methods for
assimilating HF radar measurements of waves and currents into
the POL Coastal Ocean Modelling System. The work will
contribute both to assimilation methodology and to improved
understanding of the coupling between waves, currents and
turbulence in shallow water, with potential benefits to coastal
engineering, port management, shipping, fisheries and marine
science. The joint supervisors will be Prof Lucy Wyatt, Applied
Mathematics, Prof Clive Anderson, Probability & Statistics,
Sheffield Centre for Earth Observation Science, SCEOS, University
of Sheffield, and Dr Judi Wolf, Proudman Oceanographic
Laboratory.
Candidates should have, or should expect to obtain, a good first
degree (ie BSc/BA/MMath/MStat) or MSc (or equivalent) with a
significant mathematical or statistical content. It will be possible to
undertake some training in topics relevant to the project by taking
courses from the University of Sheffield's MSc and Research
Training Programmes during the first year of research. Most work on
the project will be based in Sheffield, but some work will also be
undertaken at POL near Birkenhead. Travel expenses etc will be
paid. Applications are invited up to June 30th, but early application
is encouraged and a final decision may be taken before June 30th.
The studentship is available to EU nationals who are normally
resident in the UK: for details see
