Cars are not just made of metal
MARION GERSON (Sheffield Hallam)
This presentation draws on the statistician's experience of assisting in the understanding and improvement of processes for making and using plastics, coatings and other non-metal materials. Initiated by the demand from automotive manufacturers that their suppliers should use statistical methods, this work generally conferred major commercial benefit on the supplying companies.
Aspects of statistics in engineering
TIM DAVIS (Ford)
Higher customer expectations and increasing competitiveness in the automotive industry dictate an ever-increasing complexity of automobile systems and components, and the design and field performance of these systems becomes more difficult to understand purely in terms of deterministic engineering science. Opportunities for applying statistical science abound, serving as an empirical adjunct to modern automotive engineering practice. Engineering concepts such as Robust Design, Noise Factor Management, and Axiomatic Design will be discussed in conjunction with statistical concepts such as variance transmission, transfer functions, and reliability.
