University of Oxford
CLINICAL TRIAL SERVICE UNIT
& EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES UNIT (CTSU)
SENIOR STATISTICIAN
for genetic-epidemiological association studies
Academic-related research staff II £27,339 - £33,679
Heart Studies Group
The Clinical Trial Service Unit and Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU) is one of
the world’s leading centres for research into the causes, prevention and
treatment of chronic diseases (such as heart disease and cancer) that are major
causes of death. Blood samples have been collected in several large studies
and DNA extraction and genotyping undertaken in over 5000 myocardial
infarction cases already; an ongoing program of genetic analysis in a further
20000 vascular disease patients is underway. This represents a powerful
resource with which to assess results reported in the literature as well as explore
the genome for risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
These studies provide an excellent opportunity for a senior statistician with a
sound understanding of inferential statistics, and expertise, or ability to acquire
expertise, in state-of-the-art methods in statistical genetics (eg for association
analysis with multiple markers). The appointee will work under the overall
direction of Professor Rory Collins together with Dr Sarah Parish and be primarily
based at CTSU, but will also work with Dr Lon Cardon of the Wellcome Trust
Centre for Human Genetics (WTCHG) in Oxford, and work partly at that location.
The appointee will keep appraised of developments in pertinent statistical
methods, and direct, conduct and interpret statistical analyses, tackling statistical
issues arising (eg multiple hypothesis testing), working closely with other team
members.
The appointment will be for 3 years in the first instance. Staff are eligible for
membership of the University’s final salary pension scheme, flexible working
hours, generous holidays (30 days + public holidays) and access to the
University’s sports and social facilities.
