The course aims to present an overview of genetic epidemiology, covering
basic issues, study design, principles of analysis and applications of
genetic epidemiology. By the end of the course, participants will have an
understanding of:
i) the basic issues in genetics required for an understanding of genetic
epidemiology
ii) familial aggregation, twin studies and the concept of heritability
iii) linkage and linkage disequilibrium
iv) basic study designs in genetic epidemiology
v) gene-environment and gene-gene interactions
vi) public health aspects of genetic epidemiology
This course is designed for medical researchers who already possess an
understanding of epidemiological concepts and methods. Students should have
knowledge of statistical methods to the level of our Basic Statistics
course and of epidemiological methods to the level of our Basic
Epidemiological Methods course, at a minimum (see
www.epi.bris.ac.uk/shortc/shortc.htm for further details). An elementary
understanding of genetics is also required.
A short pre-course reading list will be distributed to students.
